“My mother became anxious and claustrophobic in any place that didn’t have an open door. She could no longer take the train. Initially this may not have seem like such a crippling illness however when you are growing up in a major city like New York and can’t afford a car, your major form of transportation is the train. So of course, this had a huge effect on our lives.

I was often frustrated and exhausted. As I got older and my school was farther away, my mother could not attend certain events or even parent/teacher night because this meant she would have to take the train. I felt lonely and like my family wasn’t normal because we couldn’t do the things other families did.”

3. Don’t Minimize

Nothing can be more damaging to someone suffering from an anxiety disorder than minimizing:

“Oh stop it! You’re fine.”

“Stop exaggerating. Can’t you see what you’re doing to yourself?”

“Calm down. You’re being a drama queen!”

“Just get over it.”

When someone is suffering from an anxiety disorder, it is important to remember that they are not exaggerating or being dramatic. Minimizing responses belittle or negate the experience of the sufferer. Minimizing often causes the sufferer to feel alienated or badly about their attack, often causing a greater spiraling effect.

If you have had been feeling very down for over two weeks, you may be suffering from depression and you should get yourself some medical help.

The causes of depression are not fully clear to the medical community, but nutrition and brain chemical imbalance are factors. Additionally, it is known that genetics can also play a role in depression. If you have a close family member who is depressed, your risk for developing depression is increased.

This does not mean you are guaranteed to become depressed as there are many other factors at play here as well such as age and gender.

Some factors that can cause depression:

Genetic causes:

Depression has a genetic influence. Multiple examples of depression and possibly suicide within a single family are not uncommon. However depression can occur without any family precedent.

Stressful life events can cause anyone to become depressed. Stressful events can be anything from financial insecurity and abusive relationships, to chronic health issues.

Gender:

Depression is slightly more common in women, but in general can occur in any particular age group, ethnicity or socio-economic group.

Depression after child birth is relatively common and is a result of the hormonal changes that a woman’s body is forced to endure. It is often temporary but if it continues on after the first two to three weeks, some medical treatment may be warranted.

Age:

There are a number of reasons the elderly are particularly susceptible to depression including increased exposure to death and bereavement, financial stresses, and chronic suffering of pain and disease.

Medications:

Certain medications are known to cause depression as a side effect in some patients.

How is depression diagnosed?

A most common method used to diagnose depression is having five or more symptoms of depression for longer than two weeks.

Five symptoms of depression:

- Sadness.

- Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities.

- Feeling helpless, hopeless, and unworthy.

- Poor concentration.

- Suicide is entertained as a serious option.

Symptoms lasting 2 weeks or more is indicates a state of depression. Other tools for the diagnosis of depression include Beck’s Depression Scale Inventory and other tests used to diagnose depression.

There are currently no medical tests to diagnose depression, but certain tests can rule out other possibilities. The symptoms of depression can be similar to other conditions so ruling these out can allow for the correct treatment to occur.
